The story in a few sentences
One evening Jesus and his friends got into a boat to cross the lake. A great storm came. The waves crashed into the boat and water started coming in. The disciples were very afraid, but Jesus was asleep in the back of the boat.
They woke him up. Jesus stood and said to the wind and the waves: Be still. Everything became calm. He asked his friends why they were so afraid, and they wondered who he was, that even the wind and the sea obeyed him.
Questions to ask after
Pick one or two. You do not need them all.
- What did the disciples see and hear when the storm came?
- How do you think they felt?
- Jesus was sleeping in the boat. What do you think the disciples thought about that?
- What happened when Jesus said, “Be still”?
- Is there something that makes you feel afraid? What helps you feel safe?
If your child shares a real fear, thank them for telling you before you say anything else. More ideas in how to talk with your child about fear.
