The story in a few sentences

A father had two sons. The younger son asked for his share of the money, left home and spent it all far away. When he had nothing left and was hungry, he remembered his father's house and decided to go back and say sorry.

While he was still far away, his father saw him, ran to him and hugged him. Then he threw a party, because the son who was lost had come home. The older brother was upset, and the father gently told him: everything I have is yours, and we must be glad, because your brother has come home.

Questions to ask after

Pick one or two. You do not need them all.

  1. What happened when the son ran out of money?
  2. How do you think he felt on the road home?
  3. What did the father do when he saw him?
  4. Has anyone ever said sorry to you? How did it feel?
  5. What would you want to say if you made a mistake?

With the last two, listen first and do not steer. We explain each question in 5 questions to ask your child about the Prodigal Son.

A little prayer to say together

Dear God, thank you for loving me,
even when I make mistakes.
Help me say sorry, and begin again.
Amen.
