Queen Esther for kids: read and talk about courage
Esther was afraid, and she was brave anyway. Her story helps children see courage as doing the right thing even when they feel scared. Our read-aloud video of this story is coming soon to our YouTube channel.
The story in a few sentences
Esther was a young Jewish woman who became queen in Persia. Almost no one knew she was Jewish. Her cousin Mordecai, who had raised her, watched over her from outside the palace.
A man named Haman made a plan to hurt Esther's people. To stop it, Esther had to go to the king without being invited, which was dangerous. She asked her people to pray with her, then she went. The king listened, and her people were saved.
Questions to ask after
Pick one or two. You do not need them all.
- What was Esther afraid of?
- Who helped her feel brave?
- What was the right thing to do?
- When is it hard for you to be brave?
- What kind, brave choice could you make today?
Pick one, not all five. More ideas in how to tell Queen Esther's story to a 6-year-old.
A little prayer to say together
Dear God, when I feel afraid,
help me be brave and do what is right.
Thank you for being with me.
Amen.
